Chapter Thirteen

Sunday, May 28th, 1967

At the Oaks Grove Motel, Diane realized the kiss was not a dream. She put her arms around Steve.

Steve, “That was sweet.”

Diane, “That’s the way I want to wake up every morning.”

Steve, “Won’t my First Sergeant be surprised.”

Diane, “Dumb Army!”

Steve, “Not for long.—Let’s go have breakfast.”

Diane, “Are you dressed?’

Steve, “Pretty much—we can go have breakfast, then come back and pack up.”

Diane, “One thing you need to learn is that getting up is a little more complicated for me than for you.”

Steve, “On the job training - Great! From where should I watch?”

Diane, “Your room with the door closed!”

Steve kissed her again and left, closing the door. Diane quickly dressed and tried to deal with her hair as simply as possible. She ended up just combing it out. Then she went through the connecting door to his room.

Steve, “That was quick! I didn’t learn much though—I like your hair like that, striking!”

Diane, “You learned I can be quick. Now you can show me how to find a good restaurant in a strange town.”

Steve, “Simple - you look for one with plenty of cars.”

It turned out to be a modern restaurant with plenty of glass. The only place to park required them to walk across in front of the windows. When they entered, it was quiet and everyone was looking at them. The hostess fumbled for words, indicating they should follow her.

Seated in a booth, Steve said, “Now they can all go back to eating breakfast.”

Diane, “Some blessings require patience and a humble attitude. If you weren’t so darn handsome ... but I‘m willing to live with it.”

Steve, “They weren’t looking at me.”

Diane, “Let’s order.”

The waitress appeared, prepared to serve coffee. After doing so she took their order. Looking at Diane she said, “You look very familiar. Have I seen you in the movies or on television?”

Diane, “People sometimes ask. But, no. I’m just passing through and have to go to work tomorrow like most people.”

She left and Steve said, “Like most people who live in a luxury hotel on Miami Beach and look beautiful for a living.”

Diane, “She wouldn’t understand it’s still work. Living on the beach is just part of the job. The lucky people are living in Berkinsville among friends—or living here in this small town among friends.”

Steve, “Would you trade with her?”

Diane smiled, “Only if you come with me. — Sam let Janet and me waitress a little to get the feel of it.”

Steve, “I never saw that.”

Diane, “That was while Sam was teaching us how to cook in the kitchen. Guys weren’t always allowed to know everything.”

Steve smiled, “What else weren’t we allow to know about?”

Diane, “About the list of things you weren’t allowed to know and won’t find out.”

Steve, “Doesn’t being engaged to be engaged bring special openness”

Diane, “Not about past things that don’t concern you. You going to tell me all the boy things?”

Steve, “Nope.”

Diane, “Very well. Then those lines are drawn.”

Steve smiled. “I guess they are.”

The waitress brought rolls, butter, and honey.
